January 21 Meeting Recap

It was a quiet and brief Sunday meeting at the Monkey. We decided to adjourn early, and decided the next writing prompt would be either a) a free-write, authors’ choice! or b) a continuation of the previous Saturday meeting writing prompt: “Don’t worry, I’m from Minnesota.”

If you choose the free-write and/or are entering a short story for the ACCC’s Flash Fiction Contest (submissions are due February 1st), feel free to share your piece at the next meeting! We meet at the Waconia Library on February 3rd at 10:30am.

For those interested in learning more about writing flash fiction, here is a good article on the subject, from The Review Review, with pointers from multiple pro editors. Here’s another article on flash fiction from Writer’s Digest.

Happy writing, writerly writers!

12/2/17 Meeting Recap, & December Write-Ins Scheduled!

Is it winter yet? Today certainly didn’t feel wintery, as we met by the cozy fireplace at Waconia Library this morning! Although, you couldn’t miss the carolers on horseback who congregated outside the Waconia City Hall, adorned with holiday cheer.

The WWG members in attendance discussed upcoming meeting dates and times for the month of December. Here’s what we decided:

  1. To give everyone some breathing room in their busy holiday schedules this season, this month’s third Sunday meeting at Mocha Monkey (December 17) has been CANCELLED. We will next meet as a group on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Waconia Library (regular time of 10:30am). You can find the prompt for next meeting here.
  2. To make up for the lack of together time this month, for those who are interested, some of us WILL be meeting at Mocha Monkey (115 S. Olive St., Waconia) a few times in December, during the week, for some writing time! Our participants in National Novel Writing Month this past November met at Mocha Monkey several times for some official Write-Ins, to work on our projects independently, but together in the same space. We decided to continue the practice! Here’s when we’re meeting at the Monkey:

Wednesday, 12/6, 7-9pm
Wednesday, 12/13, 7-9pm

The idea is to show up when you can, and stay as long as you like. We may add dates, so we’ll keep you posted!

Happy writing!

November meetings and miscellany

We had a lovely little meeting at our favorite local coffee shop this past Sunday, November 19th. We kicked off the show by sharing some personal anecdotes about our writing processes: what’s been working, what had inspired us, what we’re trying to accomplish with our writing.

The brave souls participating in National Novel Writing Month shared a bit about their projects and how their processes differ (plotters vs pantsers!). This led into an engaging discussion about our relationships to our characters. How sometimes, from the very start, we are simply along for the ride with our characters as they live their lives out on our pages. And sometimes – even with the best of intentions (and miles and miles of plot arcs) – our characters surprise us, veer off our meticulously charted plot map, and take us somewhere very new and different from where we were expecting to go.

Characters are MAGICAL. Especially when they leap from the page and morph into actual human beings, real people with their own motives, dreams and attitudes. We often marvel at how the simple exercise of profiling a character can jump-start ideas for an entire story! Here is a link to a great article about crafting compelling characters, from Writer’s Digest. Well, okay why not… here’s another one.

After sharing our work, we discussed the idea of continuing the practice of organizing write-ins (such as those for NaNoWriMo) on a more frequent basis for the group. A write-in is very much what it sounds like: a group of people convening in the same place to write and work on projects, independently but in each other’s company. Interestingly enough, some of us find that we tend to write more, feel more motivated to write, when we physically remove ourselves from the comforts (and distractions!) of our homes. It also doesn’t hurt to surround one’s self with fellow writers for moral support and inspiration! Planning future write-ins is an idea we would like to bring to the group at our next meeting (Saturday, December 2nd).

Lastly, we chatted about the In Our Own Words section of the website, and how it is currently underutilized. We hereby extend this call for submissions!

  • Do you have a piece of writing you’re proud of (one you’ve written through the WWG prompts, or have worked on independently)?
  • Would you like to feature your writing on our website?

Posting pieces (we’re willing to have in the public spotlight) up on our site would give visitors a peek at the diversity of our group, and would share a lot about who we are as writers! Please let Jen or Mary know if you would like to participate; we can assist with typing handwritten pieces, converting Word documents to more secure document formats, and getting them up on the WWG website to shine!

Happy Turkey Weekend! See you next time, intrepid writers!

Next WWG Meeting:

Saturday, December 2, at 10:30am
Waconia Library (fireplace area)

Prompt: Write a piece or a story using the words: twin, crimson, rattled, exploded, aftermath, confession, barren

New NaNoWriMo Write-Ins at the Waconia Mocha Monkey

(Now read that post title 5 times, fast!)

Last week, a small group of kindred word-makers met a few times upstairs at a local coffee shop on Olive Street. Few words were exchanged, because the collective effort was to get as many words as they could onto paper/Word docs/Google Docs/etc. And those meetings were just what they all needed! A change of scene… motivation and inspiration from being in the presence of other writers… whatever it was for each of them, it worked, and they decided they needed more!

As part of the festivities surrounding National Novel Writing Month, the WEST of the West Metro Write-Ins at Mocha Monkey will continue through the month of November!

Future dates/times are listed below:

  • Thursday, November 16, 7pm-9pm (holy smokes, that’s tomorrow!)
  • Friday, November 17, 7pm-10pm
  • Wednesday, November 22, 7pm-9pm
  • Wednesday, November 29, 7pm-9pm

The write-ins so far have been modest, drop-in events, with people joining when they can and staying as long as they want. We’ve been utilizing Mocha Monkey’s upstairs space; on the weekdays there are usually quite a few open tables. And to reiterate, all writers are welcome, even if you’re not working on an official NaNoWriMo project.

Stay tuned for more information on plans for a Finale Write-In on November 30th, the last day of NaNoWriMo (time and location TBD)!

See you tomorrow, fellow wordsmiths!
