WWG Meeting this weekend!

When we’re meeting: Sunday, October 21st, at 4:30pm!

Where: The Crossings Apartments in Waconia.

What is the prompt? Write a piece about “the forgotten.” Could be a memory, physical object, however you interpret what “the forgotten” means. Ideas to get started: What has been forgotten? By whom? How was it forgotten? What are the consequences if it isn’t found or remembered?

Oct. 6 Meeting Recap, and More!

We had a small but chatty group at our Saturday meeting! We covered some interesting topics, including suggestions for how to keep a project moving forward when it starts to feel like you’ve been working on it too long… even if that maybe means taking a step away from what you’re working on for awhile, focusing on other new projects to help rejuvenate your creative spark, and coming back to your work in progress with refreshed eyes!

Some of our members shared their obituary pieces, some shared excerpts of novels they’re continuing to develop and grow (congrats on the progress!).

NEXT MEETING:

Date: Sunday, October 21st
Time: 4:30pm
Place: The Crossings Apartments, 200 Olive St., Waconia
Prompt: Write a piece about “the forgotten.” This could be a memory, physical object, however you interpret what “the forgotten” means. Some sub-prompts to help get started: What has been forgotten? By whom? How was it forgotten? What are the consequences if it isn’t found or remembered?

WWG ANTHOLOGY UPDATES:

The WWG Anthology is progressing! Jen is currently compiling and formatting a first draft of all of the pieces our members have contributed thus far. Thanks again to everyone who sent in their lovely words!

Next steps:

  • Jen will notify everyone when the draft is complete (aiming for the October 21st meeting), and will print two hard copies to bring to the next several meetings, for members to review and write their notes on.
  • Jen will send quote requests to a few different printers around town, to get printing quotes on a few different finished book types (i.e. perfect bind vs. chapbook/magazine bind).
  • You can still contribute pieces during this time! At least through the month of October. Please look through your writing collection and see if there’s anything that tells your story as a writer (doesn’t have to be written for WWG!) that you’d like to feature in the anthology.
  • Call for artwork. A book needs a cover, and we’re still looking for a volunteer(s) to design ours. Any artists in the group with ideas, let us know at the next meeting or send us a message. We’re also looking to feature some black-and-white artwork inside the book, so let us know!

MORE UPDATES:

National Novel Writing Month is fast approaching! November 1-30. Check out the website here, or ask about how to NaNo at our next meeting.

As always, check out our Events Page for information about upcoming writing-related events in our community!

WWG Meetings this week

Hello all!

Here is a quick rundown of Waconia Writers’ Group meetings this week:

Tonight (Wednesday, 10/3), 7:00pm

WWG Write-In at Mocha Monkey

  • This one is casual… come if/when you can, stay as long as you want, or until they close the doors on us at 9!
  • We tend to meet upstairs, where it’s generally quieter and there’s more table space. Look for me/Jen, I’ll be there at 7.
  • Bring any writing projects you want to work on.
  • Mostly we write, but there can be optional discussion/critique as well if requested (we’ve done mini-critiques at these before and it’s been pretty valuable!).

Saturday, 10/6, 10:30am

WWG Meeting at Waconia Library (Activity Room)

  • Writing prompt for this meeting is: Write an obituary or an epitaph. It can be yours. It can be for a fictional person. It can be contemporary, Victorian, or from any time period. But the goal is to write about how a person is remembered – and immortalized in words – after they pass on.
  • Or you can share any of the last few meeting’s prompts, if you like! Here’s the link to the website Prompts page: https://waconiawriters.wordpress.com/past-prompts/

See some of you tonight! And on Saturday! Enjoy the rest of your week, and find those words!

Upcoming meetings

Hi writers,

Unfortunately I can’t make the Wednesday Write-In at Mocha Monkey tonight. *sad face* The weather isn’t lovely to be out in, either, but I encourage anyone who was planning on writing at Mocha tonight to still go! It’s such a nice change of pace, and thanks to everyone who’s attended so far! I’ll definitely be back in action for next week’s Write-In!

We also have a Writer’s Group meeting coming up this Sunday, September 23, at 4:30pm (at The Crossings Apartments).

The prompt is a Dream Theme. Last time, as a group, we came up with a few ideas to help get inspiration flowing:

  • What happens if your dream turns out to be real?
  • What happens if your sleep ends but your dream doesn’t?
  • Dreams as alternate reality.
  • Dreams as a portal.
  • Write about a recurring dream.
  • Write about a nightmare you had that stuck with you.

See you Sunday!

9/8 Meeting Recap

We had a lovely meeting on Saturday, with a lot of inventive/spooky variations on the prompt “No one heard me scream.”

We decided as a group to space our September meetings out just a bit, so the next Sunday meeting will take place on September 23, at 4:30, at The Crossings.

Our prompt for Sunday Sept. 23 is a DREAM THEME! Here are some ideas to help get you started:

  • What happens if your dream turns out to be real?
  • What happens if your sleep ends but your dream doesn’t?
  • Dreams as alternate reality.
  • Dreams as a portal.
  • Write about a recurring dream.
  • Write about a nightmare you had that stuck with you.
  • Whatever else inspires you about the unconscious mind…

A note about write-ins…

Hello, fellow word warriors!

In honor of fostering and supporting spaces for creative people to get their creativity on, and because another National Novel-Writing Month is nearly upon us, I’ve decided to try hosting a regular weekly write-in at Mocha Monkey (downtown Waconia). Regular, as in: every Wednesday for the foreseeable future. As in: WWG Write-In Wednesday! (Don’t you love alliteration? I love alliteration.)

These meet-ups have been added to our Events page, but just a quick rundown on the general idea of a write-in:

  • Bring your WIPs (works-in-progress) to each session
  • Work independently in the company of other writers
  • Utilize each other for advice, feedback, moral support, etc.
  • Casual… come if/when you can, no RSVP required, and stay as long as you want to.

For me, sometimes getting out of the house and into a neutral location helps me minimize distraction, boost productivity, and (especially when other writers are present) keep myself accountable for my work.

National Novel Writing Month is November 1-30, and there will be a flurry of prep activities and materials thrown out into the writerverse over the next several weeks! If you have not participated in a NaNoWriMo before, get more information here. If you want to get going, get started here. Starting in November, the Wednesday write-ins will provide an opportunity for NaNo participants to have a space to focus and boost their word counts.

Next write-in (and first “official” WWG Write-In Wednesday) will be September 5th!

Happy writing,

Jen

Wednesday Write-In Happening Now!

Hi there, intrepid writers!

If you’re in the Waconia area tonight, between 7 and 9 p.m., stop on by our local coffee spot, Mocha Monkey, on Olive Street! If you’re needing a change of scenery and want to bring some writing projects to work on, do so!

This is an opportunity (especially for those of us who enjoy working independently in the company of others) to share a space with our writer peers, and hopefully share some creativity!

Come when you can, stay as long as you like! Find me on the 2nd floor, on the “orange” side (top of the stairs, take a left).
